Inge Lehmann's 127 year birthday

12-05-2015

May 13 2015 it is 127 years since the birth of the famous Danish seismologist Inge Lehmann. Among others, this is celebrated by google.

Google celebrates the Danish seismologist Inge Lehmann's 127 year birthday. In 1936 Inge Lehmann suggested that the Earth has a solid inner core. Her discovery was based on systematic studies of earthquakes. Furthermore, during the Cold War she was a key figure in research related to the detection of remote nuclear test explosions.

The Danish seismological service, led by Inge Lehmann 1928-1952, is today part of GEUS, where we monitor local as well as distant earthquakes from seismographs in Denmark and Greenland. GEUS also carries out research in seismology, and is the national authority and data centre for the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty under the UN.
